me too. International Issues Statement on Ghislaine Maxwell Trial
ATLANTA – Tarana Burke and Dani Ayers – Chief Vision Officer and Chief Executive Officer of me too. International, respectively – issued the following statement on the Ghislaine Maxwell Trial:
Today, we stand in support of the survivors bravely sharing their stories in the Ghislaine Maxwell trial. Survivors deserve to be heard, and most importantly, survivors deserve for their stories to be protected. In moments when survivors’ testimonies are under scrutiny, it is imperative that we collectively remember – in order to disrupt and ultimately end sexual violence, we must examine how abusers will use their power and influence to attempt to discredit survivors and diminish the harm they caused. We can interrupt this by affirming these survivors, and the survivors in our lives.
When survivors seek justice and accountability, they are forced to relive trauma. When survivors take the stand at trials, they are forced to withstand unyielding attacks on their character and, ultimately, their existence as a survivor. We continue to hold space for all survivors—those who have found their voice and those embarking on a different path to healing.
At a time when the news, social media, and even general conversation can quickly become triggering, we hope that you remember the importance of self-care. If in this moment, you find that you are in need of healing resources or moved to action, we invite you to explore the resources available at www.metoomvmt.org/how-can-we-help-you/.
